![]() ![]() October 19, 2000: After receiving a positive reaction from state leaders, The Hon. Jeff Kennett AC secured funds for a mental health advocacy group and Beyond Blue: the national depression initiative was established with 9 board directors and 9 staff. This led to the creation of Beyond Blue in October 2000 and the foundation of the work we continue to do today. A national dialogue kicked off, focusing on awareness of depression and reducing the associated stigma. It was a conversation with his daughter, following the loss of two of his daughter’s young male friends to suicide, that sparked the inception of Beyond Blue for the Hon. There were some significant milestones on our journey with the community that we want to share, amongst many more. We want to take some time to reflect on the last 20 years of Beyond Blue. Let’s continue to work together harder than ever to ensure all people in Australia achieve their best possible mental health. In October 2020, our 20th anniversary, we say thank you. Today, we have built credibility to proactively seek and 'fill the gaps' in community needs. ![]() In the early years, we were often reactive to government needs. Over our 20 years, we have grown in ambition and size, expanded our remit and become a recognised leader in the sector. Sadly, suicide remains the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 49. ![]() Almost half of our population will experience mental health issues at some point in their lifetime. Our suicide rate is more than double our road toll – every day, nine people take their own lives – and most of those are men. One in six people is currently living with depression, anxiety, depression, or both. We have become the big blue door into mental health services. We are often the first place that people go if they are struggling. And never more so than now. In 2020, our collective wellbeing as a nation has come into sharp focus, and as we look beyond 2020, the impacts of the pandemic will linger for several years. People are reaching out to us for support in record numbers.Īlmost 90 per cent of people in Australia know about Beyond Blue - and with that comes a great responsibility. About 13 million people reach out to us each year. Open conversations are happening, with people checking in on their friends and family, and those who are experiencing mental health concerns.īut there is still much to be done. We do want to pause for a moment to thank those who have changed the conversation about mental health over the past 20 years. In Australia, 88 per cent of people now believe we should be more open to talking about mental health issues. Stigma and discrimination has decreased significantly in workplaces, schools and communities. Grateful for the people who recognised the need to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with depression. Grateful for those who drove the inception of Beyond Blue, and who continued to expand its remit to include anxiety and suicide prevention. Grateful for those who started to speak out with personal stories of hope, resilience and recovery, opening up a national conversation that continues so openly today.
